When You Finally See How Deep You Were
Sometimes the victory is just realizing how far you've risen.
I was on a call yesterday with a friend of 15 years. She was telling me about her latest encounter with toxic family members... a tide she's been pulled under by more times than either of us can count.
But this time... she didn't drown.
She stood on the shore inside herself. She let their words crash and break without dragging her into the undertow. She didn't let them trigger her. Didn't let them pull her down into the deep where old wounds and rehearsed reactions wait.
"I never thought I could get here... to a place where they don't own me anymore."
It's been a decade of steady swimming for her. A decade of learning the shape of her own currents. Of building strength in waters that once only tried to take her under. And now, with more breath in her lungs than she's ever had, she can look back and see the truth:
How deep she was in it for so long. Why her decisions were panicked and desperate. Why her body felt heavy. Why she couldn't care for herself the way she wanted.
When You're at the Bottom
When you're at the bottom, survival is the only goal. You claw toward the light in any way you can. You take whatever floats, no matter how splintered, because the surface is all that matters.
And the tools... oh, the tools... the more often you use them, the more air you find.
But life... life will always send riptides. People. Programming. The weight of the world. They'll try to pull you back down into the dark. The point is to keep swimming. To keep rising, even when the surface feels far.
Because eventually... you break through.
What the Surface Gives You
And when you do, you realize something new: reaching the surface isn't the end. You still have to swim. You still have to find land. And even then, storms will come.
But the surface gives you a choice. It gives you breath. It gives you enough space to notice the horizon... to believe there might be more than endless water.
Trading Oxygen
My friend and I met each other at the bottom. We've been trading oxygen ever since. A little air from my tank when she's sinking. A little from hers when I am. We are proof that it's possible to rise. Proof that with the right tools, the right people, you can swim in any direction you choose.
